Johnny Cake Making
$80
per person
Johnny cakes became popular on Anguilla in the 18th and 19th centuries, as a meal for long journeys. Johnny cakes—made from simple ingredients like cornmeal, water, salt, and later baking powder—were easy to prepare and filling.
Over time, they became a beloved part of Anguillian cuisine, often served alongside saltfish or enjoyed with butter and jam as a daily comfort food. This experience will teach you the techniques of making baked Johnny Cakes at the South Hill Community Rock Oven or fried Johnny Cakes at your accommodation (where applicable) or at a Quest location.

Johnny Cake Making is a ‘must’ and was far and above what we imagined. The lady who taught us was so very lovely and patient and clearly skilled and tried her best with two novice cooks. We were both proud of our batch of cakes and even better were able to share them with our envious family when we returned home so a very big thank you from all of us.

Learning to make authentic Johnny Cakes with the beautiful Miss Aggie was a dream come true! We’ve enjoyed these delicious Caribbean treats for many years and have always wanted to learn how to make them! Aggie is a phenomenal baker and instructor – her tips and techniques were fantastic! – and discovering how an outdoor rock oven works was fascinating. As you’ve probably guessed, the best part of this Quest Experience is biting into a warm, mouthwatering Johnny Cake fresh from the rock oven!! WOW!!! This special hands-on experience allowed us to step into Anguilla’s history, culture, and culinary scene. What a privilege. Thank you for sharing the recipe; now we can regularly enjoy a taste of Anguilla in our home until our next trip! We can’t wait to book more Quest Experiences soon!

Had a wonderful experience today with Chef Sandra who gave us a lesson on making traditional (and delicious) johnny cakes. Many thanks to her and the folks at Quest. Highly recommended
